Discover more about Matthew’s experiences as an apprentice at ALA, and his life outside of work, below…

What do you enjoy most about your line of work?

Since joining the profession after a previous career in retail, I have really enjoyed learning about the industry and the variety that construction has to offer. I am relishing the opportunity to have a positive impact on the built environment and working on some really interesting projects at the same time.

Out of work, what do you do for fun?

I enjoy spending time with my young family and watching my beloved Wigan Warriors rugby league team! When I get the chance, I love being outdoors whether it be walking, camping or paddle-boarding. I also play guitar, which I can often be found doing through the early hours alongside my colleagues at ALA get togethers!

What is the best part about working for ALA?

Undoubtedly its the people. The team at ALA are competent, friendly, dedicated and supportive. The ALA culture is one that constantly gives opportunities and drives you on to continuously improve.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far?

Juggling the challenges of completing a degree, whilst working full-time and being present for my young daughter has been challenging but also very rewarding. I am looking forward to graduating in 2025 and getting some evenings and weekends back!

What work-related achievement do you value the most?

Gaining a promotion to QS after only 18 months in the industry was hugely gratifying and proved that I had made the correct decision switching from my previous career in retail.

What non-work-related achievement are you most proud of?

Having my daughter, Orla, and being part of her growth into a happy, funny, independent and somewhat stubborn little girl has undoubtedly been my greatest achievement and a pleasure along the way.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In the next five years I would like to have completed my degree in 2025, my RICS chartership and to continue to work on interesting and important projects and perhaps even embark on a master’s degree if I am brave enough!

What is the most important thing to you as a person?

I think honesty and authenticity are two qualities that I try to embody. They are especially important qualities for a QS to help drive performance and to build trust within the profession.

How are you finding life at ALA on a day-to-day basis?

It’s fantastic, ALA has given me the opportunity to further my career by work on interesting and prestigious projects, such as the restoration of Manchester Town Hall. I get to work for a range of diverse clients as part of a team of talented Quantity Surveyor’s and planners.

What is your favourite film, song and food?

Film: Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King

Song: These Days – Jackson Browne

Food: Steak

Finally, what advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship with ALA?

There is often a misconception that apprenticeships are only open to school leavers and young adults. However, apprenticeships are open to all ages and are a fantastic way to earn whilst you qualify. I would recommend ALA for an apprenticeship due to the fantastic support offered and the opportunity to work alongside excellent and passionate professionals with diverse experiences and chance to work on large scale, interesting projects across the world!
