I joined ALA in 2018 as a claims consultant and senior quantity surveyor, and progressed to the Associate Director role in 2021.  I’m based at the ALA head office in Kirkby Lonsdale.

My life in the construction industry began as an accounts assistant for a regional main contractor operating in the Lake District and the surrounding areas.  I soon realised that was not the career for me and that I longed for a little more action.  I moved over to the projects team and took up the post of assistant quantity surveyor, quickly developing my knowledge and skills as I advanced to being a senior quantity surveyor.  I worked on a broad spectrum of projects across many sectors, including health, education, residential, hospitality, and commercial.  I gained invaluable contractual, commercial, and practical experience, with my day-to-day role incorporating elements of estimating, contracts managements, procurement, and project management, along with the more traditional quantity surveying tasks.

At one point, we engaged Adrian Lamb, the founder of ALA, to assist us with a commercial dispute: this was my first exposure to dispute resolution, and it piqued my interest.  I commenced my BSc in Quantity Surveying on a part-time basis and my interest in the construction law aspect of the course grew and grew.  I graduated with first class honours and received an RICS award for the highest overall degree grade for that year.

Consequently, I decided the time was right for my career to take a new direction and I joined the team at ALA: I’ve never looked back.  I have already gained fantastic experience working with the excellent team here and been involved with such fascinating and varied construction and engineering projects and disputes.  These have ranged from water treatment works, to energy-from-waste plants, to pipelines, to luxury high rise residential apartments in central London.

I develop, prepare and evidence claims and reports, setting out entitlement for commercial and contractual issues, extensions of time, loss and expense and other disputed matters.  I have been heavily involved with numerous adjudications, for both referring and responding parties, including one which was enforced at the high court.  More recently, I have worked as a Quantum Expert, providing expert opinion on matters in dispute to assist adjudicators.

Outside work, I enjoy weight training, running, hiking, loud gigs, and football (I’m a card-carrying lifetime member of the Jürgen Norbert Klopp Appreciation Society).
